THE KEYS

In The Keys creëerden negen kunstenaars met hun werk een actueel document dat reflecteert op tijd en ruimte van de laatste buitenplaats van Amsterdam. De verschillende bronnen en verhalen van en over vroegere bewoners van Huize Frankendael van 1650 – 2006 vormden daarbij de inspiratiebron. Veel werken kwamen in situ tot stand. De kunstwerken bieden de sleutels tot Huize Frankendael. Het ware verhaal van het huis wordt echter gecreëerd door de beschouwer zelf. The Keys fungeert van 2010 – 2012 als basiscollectie van Huize Frankendael.

The Keys connects – albeit not chronologically – the various histories of the residents of Huize Frankendael. From 1650 – 2006 around eighteen residents inhabited this countryhouse. Their heritage was taken as a source of inspiration to commission nine artists to make a new work reflecting past and present of this residual homestead. Whereas existing, established ways of presenting art - within rectangular, white-cube frameworks – position the viewer in a distanced, critical dimension towards the work, The Keys attempts to work with the narrative character of art, avoiding the pitfall of ‘art as illustration’. In the end, it is the people and the surroundings of the house that constitute a genuine portrait of Huize Frankendael and its residents.

PERFORMANCE Mascha de Vries


Mascha de Vries (beeldend kunstenaar) werkte dit voorjaar in de salon op Frankendael aan ‘An Object In Life’. Samen met Matthew Kelly Roman (danser) veranderden ze de atmosfeer rond het huis met een intense performance waarbij groei centraal staat. De ontwikkeling van de mens in het eerste levensjaar vormt het fundament van een choreografie waarbij de kleding van Nozomi Kume de danser transformeert, terwijl tijd en beweging vorderen. Nozomi Kume (textiel) ontwikkelde textiel dat verandert naarmate het wordt gedragen. Mascha de Vries liet in haar performance 'airguitar' (2001, SMBA) al zien hoe de spanning tussen kunst en dans kan worden uitgebuit. Het resultaat is een spanningsvolle performance in de salon, waarbij lichaam en geest elkaar aftasten. Tijdens de performance stond het publiek buiten, en keek door het raam van de salon naar de performance die in de salon plaatsvond. Komend jaar zal de performance herhaald worden.

During spring Foundation Frankendael joined forces with Mascha de Vries on a performance on location. Mascha de Vries (artist, performance and video) collaboraties for this performance with Nozomi Kume (textile) and Matthew Kelly Roman (dance). Together they changed the air around the house. Their intense performance is based on the first physical development of our species. Standing on an awkward position (see photo), you can grasp the vast movement of early life.
